The “I’ll take it easier when…” trap

sent by Virpi Tervonen

“I will take it easier when…” I believed that sentence for years. Complete the project, achieve the goal, reach the milestone. Then take a break.

But the break never came. Not because I failed to reach the goals. I reached them and kept moving. A planned project was already underway, an unplanned opportunity appeared, or my vision had grown with the business.

That is the reality of a growth-focused business. As a future-oriented, creative entrepreneur, you keep exploring, creating and moving forward. Your goals mark what you want to achieve along the way. They do not stop the flow.

The trap is expecting a completed goal to create an “after” where the flow pauses. A project can end. A goal can be achieved. But entrepreneurship is not something you finish. When rest, breaks or joy belong to “after this goal”, they are waiting for a pause the business was never going to create.

Taking it easier cannot belong to “when”. It has to belong inside the flow.

Take 10-15 minutes over the weekend to reflect on these questions:

  1. Looking back at this year, did “I will take it easier when…” show up in any form? If it did, how did the sentence end?

  2. Looking beneath that sentence, what emotion or belief might be driving it? What do you expect achieving the goal will finally allow?

  3. If taking it easier belonged inside the flow, what would that look like next week? Where could it fit naturally?

If you would like to continue the conversation, I would love to hear your thoughts.

Yours in good business,
